Community Action in Self Help, Inc. was incorporated under the
membership not-for-profit corporation laws of New York State in
February 1970. As such, the board of Directors is elected from
the general membership. The agency was originally created to
assist low-income families in organizing self-help housing
projects in Wayne County. Many units were constructed
throughout Wayne County utilizing the Farmers Home
Administration’s self-help housing program. § In 1978-1982,
Community Action in Self Help, Inc was the administrator for
Wayne County’s small cities’ block grant home improvement
program (WHIP), through which over 150 units of housing were
rehabilitated in four towns. § In 1985 we assumed responsibility
for Wayne County’s Section 8 housing program, a federal program
to subsidize apartment rental cost. The agency is responsible
for providing subsidies to 135 Section 8 Voucher assisted
families. § In 1986, Community Action in Self Help, Inc
completed its first low-income apartment complex. § In 2008 we
manage over 47 units of low cost housing in various complexes
around the county. § The Agency has sponsored and/or developed
182 units of rental housing in Wayne County. The Agency has
supported and advised hundreds of residents desiring to own
their own home through the Farmers Home Administration’s 502
homeownership program. Additionally, the agency periodically
secures grants to assist those who qualify for government
mortgages to make home ownership a reality. § Through grants
secured by the Agency and through applications to outside
funding sources, the agency has helped hundreds of homeowners to
repair furnaces, roofs, septic systems, electrical & plumbing
systems to install equipment for the handicapped. § |
